Speech Title :
What drives automotive R&D? Ideas for Today and Tomorrow.
Abstract :
What are the current technology drivers?  What potential research themes address these?  How to ensure that research is targeted to respond to the drivers?  These are the questions that I will attempt to address today.  Legislations exert pressure on manufacturer to produce more fuel economy and environmental-friendly cars.  In response, manufacturers reduce vehicle mass and engine size.  However, customers demand the same performance in vehicles.  R&D is required on improve ride and NVH as a result of the drive to reduce CO2 emission.  R&D activities in IHL must be correctly targetted to avoid recreating existing technology, creating irrelevant technology and providing good return on investment from MOE and MOSTI.  This call for automotive researchers in IHL to collaborate and form a consortium of automotive R&D laboratories to respond to industries’ needs.  A joint IHL-industry platform or forum must be established to enable better coorperations and sharing of information.
